Vietnam and Switzerland are looking to enhance their longstanding diplomatic relationship by expanding cooperation in several key areas, including trade, investment, and innovation. This commitment was reiterated during an event in Bern celebrating Vietnam’s National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Vietnamese National Assembly Vice President Nguyễn Thị Thanh emphasized the importance of the relationship with Switzerland, noting the historical support Switzerland has provided to Vietnam. Thanh highlighted the existing collaboration in fields such as politics, trade, education, and technology and expressed Vietnam’s desire to build on political trust and traditional friendship to deepen economic ties and scientific cooperation.
Trade between the two countries currently surpasses $2 billion annually, with over 100 Swiss companies operating in Vietnam across diverse sectors, including pharmaceuticals, food processing, and precision machinery. Thanh pointed out areas where Switzerland’s expertise aligns with Vietnam’s developmental needs, suggesting potential for further collaboration.
Swiss Senator Mauro Poggia acknowledged the significant expansion of cooperation since Vietnam’s economic renewal process began, noting Switzerland’s supportive role in Vietnam’s economic transformation and sustainable development.
Further strengthening the relationship, Vietnamese Ambassador to Switzerland Châu Mai Anh mentioned the upcoming establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership in 2025 and the completion of negotiations on a free trade agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association as pivotal achievements in bilateral relations.
Both nations are optimistic about future cooperation opportunities in innovation, digital transformation, sustainable development, finance, and human resource development, aiming to build on the strong foundation of their existing partnership.
