Eni Caps Fuel Prices as Sicilian Truckers Plan Strike Over Costs

by admin477351

In a bid to alleviate the financial burden on households and businesses, Italy’s state-controlled energy company Eni has implemented a 30-day cap on fuel prices at its service stations. This move, effective from Monday, sets the maximum price for diesel at €2.19 per litre and for unleaded petrol at €1.99 per litre. The new pricing scheme comes as a response to the ongoing fuel cost surge, exacerbated by tensions related to the Iran conflict. The capped prices are approximately 17 cents per litre less than the average rates previously recorded.

Simultaneously, discontent is brewing among Sicilian truck drivers who have announced a five-day strike from October 16 to 20. Their protest centers on high fuel costs and what they perceive as inadequate governmental action in addressing their concerns. Taxi drivers have also voiced their frustrations, warning of potential industrial action if the government does not engage in discussions regarding fuel prices.

Adding to the efforts to mitigate rising fuel costs, Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy company SOCAR is set to introduce similar price caps at its IP petrol stations across Italy. This initiative aligns with broader measures aimed at cushioning the impact of escalating fuel expenses.

In a separate move to combat the surge in fuel prices, the Italian government has reduced diesel duties. However, this tax reduction is poised to end in early October, leaving the future of fuel cost management uncertain.
