Austria is exploring the possibility of joining Luxembourg in the GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative as the two countries aim to enhance their defense and security collaboration. During a recent visit to Luxembourg, Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner engaged in discussions with her Luxembourg counterpart, Defence Minister Yuriko Backes, focusing on expanding their partnership in areas such as defense, space, and cybersecurity.
A significant portion of Tanner’s visit was dedicated to talks with SES, a satellite operator, regarding Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program. Tanner emphasized the increasing significance of secure satellite communications in the current climate of geopolitical uncertainty. She noted that bolstering cooperation in this field could enhance the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic independence.
GovSat 2 is a project aimed at delivering secure communication services to Luxembourg’s defense sector, the European Union, NATO, and allied nations. The satellite is slated for launch in 2029, and Austria’s participation would potentially expand its capabilities and reach.
As part of their effort to strengthen bilateral ties, Austria and Luxembourg signed a letter of intent to collaborate more closely in various defense-related domains. These areas include cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. While Austria has not disclosed the level of financial commitment it might make to the GovSat 2 initiative, the discussions signify a promising step towards more integrated defense strategies between the two countries.
