The Council of the European Union has reached a consensus on its stance regarding the EU’s proposed budget for 2027, which marks the culmination of the financial blueprint set for the 2021-2027 timeline. This draft budget outlines €191.88 billion in commitments and €202.07 billion in payments, all while excluding allocations made through special instruments that fall outside the EU’s long-term financial plan.
According to the Council, this budget proposal is crafted with a cautious financial strategy in mind, yet it ensures sufficient funding for essential EU policies and initiatives. It emphasizes the need for the EU to maintain its resilience in the face of ongoing geopolitical issues, such as the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the pressures stemming from migration.
Simon Harris, Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, expressed that the budget proposal is designed to equip the EU with the financial means necessary to tackle the intricate geopolitical shifts currently unfolding. The Council highlighted the necessity for flexible financial measures to address unforeseen events and to guarantee timely funding for existing obligations.
The Council is anticipated to formally solidify its position on this budget in September. The timeline for reaching an agreement with the European Parliament is set to conclude by November 16, 2026, ensuring ample time for negotiations and final adjustments.
