Luxembourg City Requests Expansion of CCTV Surveillance in City Centre

by admin477351

Luxembourg City is seeking to enhance its surveillance measures by installing additional CCTV cameras in the city centre. Mayor Lydie Polfer has formally requested authorization from Home Affairs Minister Léon Gloden to proceed with the expansion, which has already received preliminary approval from the municipal council. However, the specific number and locations of the cameras remain undecided as police conduct an assessment of security needs to determine priority areas for installation.

Mayor Polfer explained that while CCTV cameras cannot prevent every crime, they are valuable tools for investigators in identifying suspects and reconstructing events. This initiative follows the expansion of surveillance in the Gare district and Bonnevoie, led by Deputy Mayor Maurice Bauer, in response to increasing security demands and reported criminal activities.

The proposal comes amid calls from local business owners and residents who are advocating for stronger security measures to combat issues such as pickpocketing. Supporters of the expanded surveillance believe that CCTV footage could significantly aid police investigations and that the visible presence of cameras might deter potential offenders.

As the city moves forward with its plans, the focus remains on equipping law enforcement with the necessary resources to effectively maintain public safety while addressing community concerns about crime in the area.
