Singapore and Luxembourg are looking to deepen their collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and space and satellite communications. This move aims to enhance their enduring partnership. According to Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, both nations face similar challenges as smaller states with limited domestic markets and natural resources. However, they have leveraged their openness and global connections to establish themselves as significant financial and business centers that cater to larger regional markets.

Wong emphasized the robust economic relationship between the two countries. He pointed out that Luxembourg is the biggest European Union investor in Singapore, while Singapore holds the position as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment target within the EU. The leaders of both nations are also keen on strengthening the ties between the ASEAN bloc and the European Union. Wong noted that Singapore and Luxembourg both advocate for regional integration and are committed to maintaining an open, rules-based international framework.

During an official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden met with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their discussions touched on geopolitical developments and explored strategies for promoting stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. Frieden’s visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, marking a significant milestone.

Highlighting the importance of the relationship, Luxembourg is opening its first resident embassy in Singapore, which signals its dedication to fostering closer ties with Singapore and the broader region. As part of his visit, Frieden is slated to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, which will focus on Europe’s role and autonomy amidst a shifting global landscape.
