In a move that symbolizes the strengthening of diplomatic ties, Swiss President Guy Parmelin and his spouse, Caroline Parmelin, are set to visit Vietnam on October 17–18. This visit comes at the invitation of Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse, Ngo Phuong Ly. The timing of the visit is significant as it precedes the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Switzerland, which will be celebrated in 2026.

In January 2025, the relationship between the two nations was elevated to a comprehensive partnership, laying the groundwork for enhanced collaboration across various sectors. During his visit, President Parmelin will engage in talks with To Lam and meet with other key Vietnamese leaders, including Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and National Assembly President Tran Thanh Man. The discussions are anticipated to focus on bolstering bilateral relations and exploring new avenues for cooperation.

Economic ties between Vietnam and Switzerland form a pivotal part of their partnership, with bilateral trade surpassing US$1 billion last year. As one of the major European investors in Vietnam, Switzerland plays a significant role in the country’s economic landscape. The visit is expected to further promote trade and investment opportunities between the two nations.

Beyond economic interests, the partnership extends to education, vocational training, labor, science, technology, and innovation. These areas of cooperation have been instrumental in strengthening the relations between the two countries, and the upcoming visit is likely to reinforce and expand these collaborative efforts.

The visit by President Parmelin highlights the ongoing diplomatic engagement between Switzerland and Vietnam, aiming to deepen ties and foster mutually beneficial initiatives. As both countries look toward the future, this visit marks a step forward in their shared journey of collaboration and partnership.
