Luxembourg finds itself among the least progressive nations within the European Union when it comes to renewable electricity consumption, according to the most recent data from Eurostat for 2025. Despite an overall increase in renewable energy usage across the EU, Luxembourg’s reliance on these sources remains limited. The data reveals that renewable sources comprised just 20.2% of the country’s gross final energy consumption, positioning it near the bottom of the EU rankings.
When focusing specifically on electricity consumption, Luxembourg’s performance is similarly lackluster. Only 23.3% of its gross electricity consumption was sourced from renewables, with only Czechia and Malta trailing behind. This places Luxembourg in a challenging position as the EU continues its push for cleaner energy solutions among its member states.
The broader European Union is making strides in its renewable energy efforts, with renewables accounting for 26.2% of the bloc’s gross final energy consumption in 2025. This marks a significant increase from the 9.6% recorded in 2004. As part of its ambitious climate goals, the EU aims to elevate this figure to 42.5% by 2030, underscoring the need for countries like Luxembourg to accelerate their renewable energy transitions.
Leading the charge in renewable energy within the EU are countries like Sweden, which stands at the forefront with 65.4% of its overall energy consumption derived from renewable sources. Finland and Denmark also rank highly in their adoption of renewable energy. Austria, in particular, boasts an impressive record in renewable electricity consumption, generating over 90% of its electricity from renewable sources, setting a benchmark for others to follow.
