Economic analysts predict around 24.9 million overnight stays for the 2026 summer season, marking a slight decrease of about 1 percent compared to the previous year. The dip is largely linked to decreased demand from long-haul travelers, with disruptions in airspace, rising fuel costs, and elevated airfare contributing to the challenges faced by international visitors, especially those from Asia.
The impact is expected to be most pronounced among tourists from India and Southeast Asia, as flights through major Middle Eastern hubs face disruptions and broader economic factors tied to energy imports exert additional pressure. Swiss tourism operators have already reported signs of sluggish business conditions, pointing to a noticeable drop in visitors from Asian markets. Although the demand from China is anticipated to remain relatively steady due to direct flight options, the growth rate of travelers from the United States is projected to slow compared to previous years.
Domestic tourism is anticipated to offer some relief, with Swiss residents increasingly opting for local destinations as international travel becomes more financially burdensome. The trend of higher airfare and uncertainties around overseas travel is also fostering increased regional tourism within Europe. Meanwhile, the number of European visitors to Switzerland is expected to see a minor decline, partly attributed to the exceptional boost from major international events in the 2025 summer season, which will not recur this year.
Despite these short-term hurdles, Switzerland continues to be a highly competitive destination within the Alpine region. However, industry experts highlight ongoing challenges for certain destinations in prolonging visitor stays and maximizing revenue from tourism.
